So What Do I Write About?

First, click on the "Video" link above and watch our trailer. Now, thinking about what you just saw in the video, what are some stories that come to mind concerning the following themes and topics?:

  • School competitions

  • Situations unique to your city of duty station

  • Teen club/ officers club/NCO club events (as dependents)

  • Challenges unique to the time period you were stationed overseas or in the US

  • Historic moments witnessed, experienced or taken part in

  • Moving: How many schools? How many countries?

  • What makes being a Brat great/unique/ enriching?

  • Sentimental memories of special teachers, friends, events

  • School functions/ field trips/programs

Now jot down a sentence or two that encompasses what your story would be. What story do you want us to share with the world?

Now expand on that story. Brainstorm: write everything that comes to mind about the scenario you just began writing about. Now, read through it, because that was your rough draft. Rewrite your story now and use the REVIEW tab in Word to check your word count.

Your submission should be at least 500 words, but no more than 750. Do not worry if you are not a good writer. We will edit it!

While you’re at it, start going through your old pictures—are there pictures that you’d like to share with the world? For Cold War Memories, many people sent in extra pictures that had nothing to do with the immediate topic of their story but had historical or cultural significance to the military brat experience. These pictures proved to be invaluable in sharing our Brat history with the world. So feel free to send in as many pictures as you want!

Pictures need to be 300 dpi. If you have Dropbox, you can put them there and share the link with us (but let us know you're sending us a link to your dropbox pictures!), or just email them to our address: bratsoverseas@yahoo.com
