The book is 500 plus pages, and is almost 1.5 inches thick. We have taken our collective voices and blended it with the history of Berlin in an easily readable format. There is a List of Contributors in the back of the book if you just can’t wait to read your story! Feel free to jump around, it was the first thing we did with the proof copy also.

We decided to write a chronicle of our time in Berlin because it was an incredible, unforgettable experience. Often the uniqueness (and strangeness) of our experiences are lost on the non-Brat. However, many of us have been to a reunion or hung out with other Brats since then and discovered that we were finally talking to people who understood. These were people with a common heritage: Being a Berlin Brat.

We know the experience of living in Berlin through the Cold War and we deeply believe that this is a piece of history that should be recorded and preserved.

This book is focused on Berlin, East and West-- now one city. We put out a clarion call for stories and Berlin Brats from the 1940s to 1994 answered the call resoundingly. We began with newspaper entries that tell of the end of the war in Berlin. Then, with each successive decade an overview of the history of the city and school is detailed.

There are many books written about military personnel, but this undertaking is sure to stir the hearts of any reader who has ever moved and left all that was familiar because their country called them as a Soldier, Teacher or U.S. Dependent to represent them in a foreign land.

Please note, Anastasia Lowe will be doing a documentary on the making of the Bratsoverseas Book, Cold War Memories: A Retrospective on Living in Berlin, A City Divided-Memoirs of U.S. Dependents in Berlin. The documentary will contain Video Interviews that were later transcribed for inclusion into the book and other footage. Please check back on our Website for updates as to its availability in the future. In addition, we are already tentatively planning the Second Book which will include stories from Brats worldwide. If you have friends who missed their opportunity to submit for this book, please spread the word so they get in on the next one!
